Adventure Green Alaska (AGA) is the first and only sustainable tourism certification program in Alaska. AGA is a voluntary certification program for tourism businesses operating in Alaska that meet standards of economic, environmental and social sustainability. Businesses may qualify for Gold, Silver, or Bronze Level certification, earning the right to use the AGA logo and participate in AGA promotional activities. The businesses certified by AGA are leaders in the tourism industry. Agir pour un Tourisme Responsable (ATR) , the “Act for Responsible Tourism” association (ATR), has developed and manages a certification program called “Towards Sustainable Tourism”. Designed for tour operators, the credibility of the scheme is now established and the certification program nationally recognised as the French reference on sustainable tourism. Certification is delivered after the approval of a third party (AFNOR Certification). AFNOR audit tourism operators on an annual basis and confirm that all the criteria comprising 25 standards are being met. Towards Sustainable Tourism certification is valid for the 12 months from the time of obtaining certification. Therefore a constant commitment from the tour operators is required for ongoing certification. Due to the close collaboration between ATR Tour Operators and their respective travel agencies successful implementation of sustainable practices within the sector exist and helps move us towards the goal of responsible tourism. In 2010, ATR united eighteen tour operators of which thirteen have now been certified. Each year these tour operators send around 230,000 travelers to more than 80 countries.

The American Society of Travel Agents is the world's largest association of travel professionals. Our members include travel agents and the companies whose products they sell such as tours, cruises, hotels, car rentals, etc. We are the leading advocate for travel agents, the travel industry, and the traveling public. ASTA promotes sustaibale travel and strives to be environmentally and socially-conscious in our own operations. We develoved the ASTA Green Proram to provide education and a tool for self-assessment for travel agents and travel suppliers. The core of the program is the Green Guide, which provides an overview of green travel and checklists for each travel segment as well as sections on terminology, marketing sustainable travel, and green resources. The Coastal & Marine Union - EUCC is  is dedicated to conserving and maintaining healthy seas and attractive coasts for both people and nature. It is one of the largest international networks of coastal practitioners and experts, with offices in seven countries, and with 2700 expert members and member organisations in 40 countries all over the world. One of the Union's contributions in the field of tourism is QualityCoast, the largest international certification programme for sustainable tourism destinations. Since 2007, more than 125 tourism destinations in 23 countries have been selected for a QualityCoast Award: coastal towns, resorts and islands. The Union is seeking partners for a global destination award programme that should be in full compliance with GSTC guidance.


Conservación & Desarrollo CYD Certified S.A, is an independent and private organization, that promotes sustainable development in agriculture and tourism activities in Latin America, while providing certification to companies that meet environmental, social, safety and quality standards. Our company carries out its activities with absolutely transparency and professionalism in the inspection and certification that we perform  at the Sustainable Agriculture Network as well as Smart Voyager Program. The inspection and certification activities are performed by auditors whose technical capacity is guaranteed and based on the principles of equality, impartiality and confidentiality of customer information.


Control Union Green Choice is a certification program, created to promote sustainable tourism practices trough applicable criteria verified on site. This standard was developed by Control Union, an international certification body recognized worldwide, with offices in 81 countries. Green Choice in the only standard, on tourism certification in the world created and administrate by a certification body with expertise on audits and guiding all its processes based on the criteria of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). On 2012 CU Green Choice applied for a specific sustainable tourism accreditation with OAE (recognized by the International Accreditation Forum), assurance the quality and impartiality of our operations, and empowering the credibility of Tourism certification.

Center for Responsible Travel  (CREST) is a non-profit research institution with offices in Washington, DC and at Stanford University, whose mission is to design, monitor, evaluate, and improve sustainable tourism practices and principles. Its policy-oriented research focuses on tourism as a tool for poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation, as well as socially and environmentally responsible tourism practices.

ECEAT  follows a business oriented approach through the development and implementation of standards, management systems, training tools and by providing marketing support. ECEAT is co-founder of VISIT, the European association for sustainable tourism certificates and has initiated greentravelmarket.info, a global BtoB service linking sustainable and CBT suppliers to international tour operators. ECOTRANS  is a European network of experts and organisations in Tourism, Environment and regional development, who are seeking to promote good practice in the field of sustainable tourism. The ECOTRANS concept was established in 1988 at the International Conference Tourism and Environment in Europe in Bressanone/Brixen, Italy. The non-profit organisation ECOTRANS e.V. was founded in 1993 at the International Tourism Exchange (ITB) in Berlin.  The name ECOTRANS embodies two basic principles: the link between "ecology" and "economy" as well as the transfer and publication of know-how and hence greater transparency.

Fundación Ecoturismo Argentina, created in 1989, is the first non profit organization in South America that is dedicated to planning, development and diffusion of low-impact tourism. The Foundation was the pioneer in responsible rural tourism in Latin-American participating in the tourism reevaluation of over 350 haciendas and farm inside Argentina and South American countries. It also works actively in indigenous comunitary rural tourism en Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. Amongst its principal activities it has the training of human resources, activity for which it has developed since 1991 a series of courses and seminars related to ecotourism, responsible adventure tourism, rural and ethnic tourism. So far we are responsible for over 380 courses and workshops throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Greenloons is an all-inclusive website that illuminates ecotourism certification procedures so travelers can make vacation purchasing decisions based on ethical environmental standards for sustainability and conservation rather than marketing tactics.  The first of its kind website is aimed at travelers that want to select from a variety of third-party certified ecotourism vacation packages.  Greenloons provides key information about regional certifications and international standards for ecotourism, third-party certified vacation ecotour search and reservation capabilities, volunteer conservation effort search, and topical news. The customized community forum section of the website encourages users to share personal travel stories and advice, helping build momentum and a sense of community surrounding the responsible ecotourism movement.  By recommending these vacation experiences to families, Greenloons hopes more people will connect at a deeper level with the places and people they are visiting.

Nordic World Heritage Foundation is a category II centre, working under the auspices of UNESCO, supporting the implementation of UNESCO's World Heritage Convention (1972). NWHF is organised as a non-profit Foundation supporting international activities within the programme framework of UNESCO. It’s areas operation cover; resort and environmental education centre ownership and operation, management of special events programmes, corporate team building & CSR programmes, voluntourism and ecotourism products and local food restaurant ownership.The company won the coveted SKAL Ecotourism Award in 2006 (Thailand’s first) for its ground breaking Pang Soong Nature Trails development model under which the local tour operator develops and then operates the community owned ecotourism attraction on a revenue sharing concession basis. This collaboration of ‘real stakeholders’ has a distinct advantage over most government or NGO aid funded CBT projects and promises a far higher success rate than these options, not least because it is not subject to the specific budget or time frame limitations that have historically inhibited the successful development of community based tourism.

The West Sweden Tourism Board is a company wholly owned by the Västra Götaland Region, with responsibility for developing and marketing the Västra Götaland region as a destination. This task is carried out in accordance with the overall targets for a financially, socially and environmentally sustainable development. The aim is to become the most visited, appreciated and profitable region in Scandinavia. The tourism industry in the Västra Götaland region in 2010 had a turnover of almost 34 billion SEK and the equivalent of 26,000 full-time employees.

WoodCert is involved in training, third party inspection, forest certification, chain of custody certification, and validation and veritifcaion of forestry carbon projects per frameworks such as CCBA, CCX, Plan Vivo and ISO 14064. The World Ocean Council (WOC) is the international, cross-sectoral business leadership alliance on “Corporate Ocean Responsibility”. The WOC brings together a range of ocean industries, e.g. coastal/marine tourism, cruise lines, shipping, oil/gas, fisheries, aquaculture, renewable energy, insurance, etc. to collaborate towards a shared goal of healthy and productive seas and their sustainable use and stewardship by a responsible ocean business community.

Created in December 2006, the World Centre of Excellence for Destinations, a non-profit organization based in Montréal, is an innovative and powerful tool created with the assistance of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), with which it is linked through a memorandum of understanding. The mission of the CED is to contribute to guiding tourist destinations around the world towards excellence by: developing their competitiveness; facilitating the achievement of their sustainable development objectives; improving the quality of the experience offered to tourists and visitors; sustaining or enhancing the geographical character of a place, (i.e. its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and well-being of its residents); and providing destinations with strategic information on the main issues concerning them. The CED acts as a catalyst for partnerships and collaborations with public and private stakeholders such as: Destination Management Organizations (DMOs), associations and experts from the tourist industry, universities, and civil society at large. 

Yacutinga Lodge & Private Nature Reserve has been at the cutting edge of sustainable tourism and conservation for over 10 years now, working constantly in accordance with internationally accepted `Best Practice’ principles from our little corner of the Argentine subtropical rainforest, located close to the world famous Iguazù Falls.

Zuvy is a Spanish company that offers experiential and unique travel experiences all around the globe to independent travelers. Our main goal is to bring the traveler closer to the environmental, social and cultural reality of the destination. Fabrizio Antognelli

Fabrizio Antognelli is a Tuscany Master craftsman, with almost 25 years of professional experience in processing, transformation and marketing of High Quality foods products, including specific expertise in food hygiene and conservation procedures. After a three-month visit to Rwanda in 1998, Fabrizio decided to continue to exercise his profession, but with different aims, namely to study and implement “training on the job” courses for poor and marginalized Africans in cooking, pastry, baking, and agro food processing for the tourism industry. To ensure high quality of the courses and their future sustainability, each course works with a company building during the project (usually managed by local NGO) in the tourism sector. Each professional course is supported by curriculum on self-esteem, awareness of personal ambitions, and management of working and social lives. Mr. Antognelli currently lives and works in Inhambane, Mozambique, where he is working to raise a Socio-Professional Training Centre, experimenting with new methods of training and promotion of local products. 

Dr. Rosemary Black

Dr Rosemary Black is a Senior Lecturer in Ecotourism and Environmental Communication at Charles Sturt University in Australia, where she teaches and researches ecotourism, environmental communication, tour guiding, sustainability and evaluation. She has worked in the ecotourism industry as a tour guide and operations manager in Nepal, India, Antarctica, China, Tibet, Australia and Fiji. Rosemary has published over 30 journal articles and book chapters and edited three books in the fields of ecotourism, tour guiding, interpretation, environmental education and natural resource management.  She is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Ecotourism and the Journal of Interpretation Research. She is a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature – Commission on Education and Communication and holds a Ministerial appointment on the NSW Southern Ranges Region Advisory Committee. Rosemary co-edited the books “Quality Assurance and Certification in Ecotourism” and “Interpreting the Land Downunder: Australian Heritage Interpretation and Tour Guiding” 

Marcello Notarianni

Marcello Notarianni is an economist specialized on sustainable development of hospitality and tourism industry with over 13 years of experience. During his career Marcello gained a broad experience working for a variety range of organizations. These include intergovernmental (UNWTO, ILO), governmental (Dutch and Italian Development Cooperation), local communities, large (Sol Melia, Louvre Groupe, Arthur Andersen, Mazars) and small private enterprises, non-profit organizations, and academic and research institutions. He has been involved in several projects and programs in tree continents (Europe, Latin America and Asia): MDG, ST-EP, The International Year of Ecotourism, EU Life, Al-Invest and Asian Invest programs, between others. He was Sustainable Tourism Program Leader and Network Leader for SNV Central America and Latin America dealing with economic and social inclusion and poverty alleviation trough tourism (Inclusive Business). He also gained extensive experience in training and coaching activities at academic (Lecturer at Universities and Masters) and operational level (workshops, conference, fairs and projects). He has conducted researches, written books, papers and articles on sustainable development of tourism.  Marcello is panel member expert of UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, National Geographic Society in “Sustainable tourism and destination stewardship” and IUCN Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist Group. He is graduated en Economics and Banking at Siena University and Master on Tourism Economics at Bocconi University (Italy).

Cathy Parsons

Cathy has been involved with promoting sustainable tourism since 1994. Over the past 5 years she has been an active member of the International Advisory Council and the Temporary Executive Board of the Tourism Sustainability Council and its predecessors. She has also been a participant in the Accreditation Working Group, providing practical advice based on her experience managing a global certification program. During the period 2001 to 2006, Cathy was the CEO of the global tourism certification program, Green Globe. She was responsible for all aspects of delivering the program to tourism operations in over 50 countries with the objective of achieving a more sustainable tourism industry. During this time she participated in activities arranged by the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Stewardship Council from 2003 and arranged for the involvement of Green Globe in the Certification Network of the Americas though the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism. As a senior executive in the Australian Government Department of Tourism from 1995 to 1998, Cathy was responsible for both program administration and policy development in relation to regional tourism development and the environmental sustainability of the tourism industry. She supported the industry in developing the world’s first national ecotourism certification program. Cathy worked closely with the Australian Tourism Industry Association and was invited to participate in their Environment Committee, developing policies to lead to a more sustainable tourism industry in Australia. Cathy is currently a judge of the Qantas Sustainable Tourism Awards in the Australian Capital Territory and a part time consultant in urban planning.

Geoff Penrose

Geoff Penrose has worked in quality management and tourism certification for over 15 years. Former CEO of Qualmark New Zealand Ltd from 2004 to 2010, Geoff was responsible for the design and introduction of the first quality and environmental system that combined a national star rating system for accommodation with environmental and sustainable criteria.  Geoff has also developed certification systems for eco activities and sites and now runs an advisory service (www.worldclasstourism.com) designed to assist communities and companies improve their experience through design led customised certification systems. Geoff has an MBA degree, post graduate diploma and undergraduate degree in economics. Geoff works globally from his base in Auckland, New Zealand.

Dr. Anna Spenceley

Dr. Anna Spenceley is a tourism specialist based in South Africa. She is president and founder ofSpenceley Tourism and Development, providing a range of innovative solutions in sustainable tourism globally. In 2009, Anna was the Senior Tourism Advisor and Regional Knowledge Network Leader with the Netherlands Development Agency SNV in Rwanda.  Before joining SNV, she consulted for a wide range of institutions including the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation, the  International Trade Centre of UNCTAD, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the World Conservation Union (IUCN), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Columbia University, Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa, and the International Ecotourism Society. Anna is a member of a number of professional associations. She is Chair of  the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist Group, on the ExCo of the IUCN-WCPA Transboundary Conservation Specialist Group, and a member of  the IUCN’s Southern African Sustainable Use Specialist Group (SASUSG). She also acts on the Interim Advisory Committee of the Tourism Sustainability Council.  Anna is on the editorial board of the International Journal for Sustainable Tourism, the Journal of Educational Travel and also the journal of South African National Parks: Koedoe.  Anna is the editor of "Responsible Tourism: Critical issues for Conservation and Development" and also co-editor of "Evolution and Innovation in Wildlife Conservation".

Jonathan B. Tourtellot

National Geographic Fellow; Founding Director, National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations; and Geotourism Editor, National Geographic Traveler. Tourtellot initiated and supervises the annual Destination Stewardship surveys in National Geographic Traveler magazine. He originated the concept of geotourism as "tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place-its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents." The Geotourism Principles have been adopted by destinations from Norway and Guatemala to Portugal's Douro Valley and the city of Montreal. He helped develop the study Geotourism: The New Trend in Travel, a landmark USTA survey of traveler attitudes about sustainability.
