hello my name is Peyton Real and i am a hospitality student at the university of North Texas. i have chosen to do a project about panama and this is the organization i chose Sustainable Tourism to Energize Bocas del Toro. the following questions i have here are in order for me to write a paper about your area. please take the time to help me find out more information.
Introduction: Description of Program/mission
ii. Needs Assessment of the Region
 What are the sustainability issues in the region this program serves? Keep in mind ALL
areas of the three pillars/triple bottom line.
iii. Main Components/Requirements of the Program
iv. Current Success of the Program
 Include two examples of organizations that have followed its principles or achieved its
certification and why they are important ‐OR‐ address the range or variety of programs that have participated in the Program. The basic point of this section is to
find out if this program is attracting participation and who is participating.
v. Analysis & Evaluation of the Program
 What, if any, impact does the Program have on the needs of this area?
 Is there any economic benefit to companies for following the efforts of the Program?
Will this certification attract the company’s target market?
 Are there any other types of benefits for companies to participate in the Program?
 What are some of the challenges for the Program? E.g. legal issues, potential negative
impacts, cultural issues, etc.

Damain would make a superb member of the GSTC. I have known him for years, most intimately when he worked on the ground in helping to organize the 2008 Travelers' Philanthropy Conference in ARusha, Tanzania. He was marvelous - dependable, imaginative, worked well with Tanzanian colleagues and employees, thoughtful, and unafraid in taking tough stands around responsible tourism, even if these were not popular with some of the big NGOs and tour operators. His vision and commitment is always about bringing benenfits to local communities. He has helped build the Asilia network of small responsble safari camps and beach lodges and he is now working to create the first certification system and ecotourism society in Tanzania. He has been hands on as a businessman, has created philanthroppy foundations, and has run NGOs. I can't think of a better candidate from Africa for the GSTC.

Zach would make a great GSTC board member. His support and advice as a member of the advisory board of SEE Turtles has been critical to our success and understanding of how the tourism industry works and how to engage with tour operators to support conservation efforts of endangered species.

As someone who Depends on tourism, specifically Eco-tourism for a living, I can say that Zach Rabinor would make an extraordinary addition to the GSTC. He has fought for Mexico when Mexican tourism really needed it and he has made a difference. If I didn't have so much respect for him, I would try to dissuade you from taking him for fear of him no longer having the time and energy to be the tireless advocate for sustainable tourism we have come to count on.

Sincerely,

Todd Melcher

Central to the concept of sustainable tourism are livelihoods of communities living in pristine and undisturbed areas where tourism thrives. without paying attention to their livelihoods and planning with them, achieving the benchmarks of sustainability could be a challenge. Over the last five years we have put more effort in working with livelihood and cultural benchmarks of sustainability in creating sustainable destinations in kenya. The outcomes are overwhelmingly positive. it is emerging that empowering host communities through dialogue is the best way to advocate for sustainable tourism. we call it "community voicing". environmental management systems and all are great, but they get better when domesticated enough to give meaning to daily challenges of life.
