The Venetian Macao signs up with the EarthCheck environmental program

 

 

Our Native Village wins the Skal International Sustainable Development award for 2011


 

UNWTO is offering scholarships to destination managers for advanced degrees in tourism 

The Venetian Macao has a tradition of turning heads and being recognised as a world market leader in the leisure and gaming industry. The integrated resort has once more raised the bar in operational excellence by signing up with the EarthCheck environmental program. By working with EarthCheck, The Venetian Macao has committed to reducing its environmental footprint and to demonstrating best practices in sustainable operations.

With more than 15,000 staff and over 100,000 visitors a day, The Venetian Macao recognises that by working closely with EarthCheck, it can reduce operational costs, improve energy efficiency and lower its environmental footprint.

Over the past year, EarthCheck has helped more than 1,300 organisations in over 70 countries to reduce their consumption of natural resources. The EarthCheck certification program is independently audited and helps clients meet the environmental requirements associated with preferred supplier agreements.

GSTC Member Our Native Village won the Skal International award for “Sustainable Development in Tourism” for the year 2011. 

This is the tenth edition of the Skål International “green Awards” and was held in Turku in Finland on 19th September 2011. The award was presented by the President of Skål International, Tony Boyle in a grand ceremony in front of a global audience of professionals from the hospitality industry. 

Skål, founded in 1934, is the largest organisation of travel and tourism professionals in the world. It is the only association which embraces all sectors of the travel and tourism industry, in five Continents, 90 Countries and at over 500 locations, with  20,000 members from hoteliers to travel agents; airline, maritime, waterways, railway and coach transportation companies, tourism media, tourism academies and official tourism promotion bodies, etc.

While many entries were received in this category, the finalists were Sukau rainforest lodge Malaysia, Hacienda tres rios resort, spa & nature park, Mexico, Landlust – Rural Passion, Austria, Mexico verde, Mexico, Radisson blu resort Temple bay, Chennai India, and Our Native Village from Bangalore India.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), through the UNWTO.Themis Foundation, is granting scholarships for the Master in Tourism Destination Management to officials from  National Tourism Administrations of UNWTO Member States who wish to strengthen their skills and gain practical experience on key areas of their responsibilities.

This blended Master course (starting 9 January 2012) will provide Senior Officials from National Tourism Administrations and Tourist Destination Managers with strategic guidance and practical tools to enhance the competitive edge of destinations and prepare them for responsible growth.
